Small Bites: Slapfish To Offer Free Lobster Rolls for July 20 Grand Opening

Slapfish, the California chain of fast-casual seafood restaurants, plans to give free lobster rolls to the first 107 customers who visit during the July 20 grand opening of its Rockville location.
The chain, which announced the giveaway July 11 on its Facebook page, is opening its first East Coast location at 11 a.m. at 12055 Rockville Pike in the shopping center anchored by Giant and Target and including other eateries such as Honeygrow and Cava.
In addition to the lobster roll giveaway, Slapfish has announced the Rockville location will offer a special “Clobster Cake” that’s half Maryland crabmeat and half New England lobster. On July 21, the restaurant will give free Clobster Fritters to the first 50 people in line when it opens at 11 a.m.
The restaurant chain, based in Orange County, started as a food truck and aims to evoke the “classic seafood shack.” Its dishes include “Clobster Grilled Cheese,” a sandwich made with crab and lobster; chowder fries; a lobster grinder; a lobster burger; fish and chips; and grilled shrimp burritos, as well as lettuce-wrapped fish tacos.
The Slapfish chain, which operates 13 restaurants in California, Utah and New Mexico, is planning to open 10 more locations, including the Rockville restaurant, over the next six months.
Q by Chang to host Hubei tasting dinner Thursday
Chef Peter Chang will be sharing the cuisine of Hubei, his hometown in central China, during a tasting dinner Thursday night at his flagship restaurant, Q by Chang, in downtown Bethesda.
“A Taste of Home: Chef Peter Chang’s Hubei Tasting Dinner” will be served family-style in the restaurant at 4500 East West Highway, the restaurant announced Friday. The menu will feature “rare ingredients in dishes such as chrysanthemum greens while other dishes showcased on the menu will highlight unique culinary techniques like the homemade fish cake,” the announcement said.
Other dishes included in tasting dinner are Pan-fried Rice Flour Steamed Pork Belly, Grandma’s Shredded Pork with Green Pepper, Chicken Mushroom Curry Stew, Chopped Chili Pepper Shrimp with Vermicelli and Coral Branzino.
The dinner, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m., is $60 per person, which does not include beverages, taxes or a tip. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 240-800-3722.
Jaleo offers cooking classes this summer
Jaleo, celebrated chef Jose Andres’ downtown Bethesda tapas restaurant, is offering cooking classes on Monday and Aug. 7 on how to make Spain’s most iconic dishes.
Led by a chef, the classes will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the restaurant at 7271 Woodmont Ave. The $99 cost includes a beverage and the food made during the session.
Each class begins with a cava toast and passed tapas, according to the restaurant’s website. After cooking, the class will enjoy their dishes accompanied by sangria and house wine and dessert in the restaurant’s dining room.
Monday’s class is “The Art of Making Paella.” A waitlist is available for this class. The Aug. 7 class, “Tomatina Time,” will focus on tomato tapas that celebrate the annual La Tomatina, Spain’s most epic food fight in which people pelt each other with tomatoes. Seats are still available.
