Small Bites: Pines of Rome Opens in New Location, Reports Uptick in Customers

Bethesda’s Pines of Rome opened last week in its new location on Cordell Avenue, and owner Marco Troino said business is already better.

“There’s much more people than before” he said. “A lot more customers, definitely for lunch and also for dinner.”

The new spot at 4918 Cordell Ave. seats fewer people than the former location on 4709 Hampden Lane—about 135 compared to 200—but Troino said the tighter space was worth it for the drastic increase in foot traffic.

The Hampden Lane location, where the Italian restaurant operated for more than 40 years, was becoming less walkable because of nearby construction, he said.

Douglas Development Corp. purchased the Hampden Lane site in 2014 and hopes to put a high-rise on the property. Troino bought the former Matuba space on Cordell Avenue in January.

“We’re faring well so far,” he said.

Urban Butcher unveils “meat mountain” for two

Chef Raynold Mendizabal at Urban Butcher in Silver Spring announced his new fall menu this month, which includes a substantial “Meat Mountain.”

Meant to feed two people, the $95 dish includes 60-day dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb, pork blade steak in Latin spices, chicken drums with paprika, butcher’s sausages, charred potatoes, broccolini, chimichurri and horseradish mayonnaise.

The fall menu also includes several charcuterie items and an early supper menu—a three-course tasting menu of Urban Butcher’s best offerings.

Addie’s launches lunch and brunch menus

Addie’s, which opened Aug. 22, started serving lunch Mondays through Saturdays and brunch on Sundays. The lunch menu includes new sandwiches such as the French dip with shaved Allen Brothers prime rib, black pepper horseradish aioli, natural jus and sides.

Lunch goes from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends.

Bibibop named “hottest new concept”

Bibibop Asian Grill, the Korean fast-casual chain that recently replaced the area’s ShopHouses, was named one of five “hottest new concepts” in Nation’s Restaurant News annual list.

The publication praised Bibibop’s “highly customizable” rice bowls and remarked that the acquisition of the ShopHouse locations allows it to expand across the country and almost double its number of restaurants.
