Preview of 'Republic,' Jeff Black's New Restaurant in Takoma Park
Takoma Park scores a big one
If the food at last night’s preview party at Republic is any indication, the new Takoma Park eatery will likely become a dining destination even for those living outside the nuclear-free zone.
It won’t be surprising, as people from all over the metropolitan area frequent the Black Restaurant Group’s six other restaurants and bars, which include Black’s Bar & Kitchen in Bethesda and Black Market Bistro in Kensington.
At Republic (a play off the city’s nickname, “The People’s Republic of Takoma Park”), executive chef and partner Danny Wells will be turning out a contemporary American menu with lots of vegetarian options, as well as the Black Restaurant Group’s signature oysters. Wells, who has worked in other BRG restaurants, lives in Silver Spring, but grew up in Takoma Park.
The bar will feature three neighborhood-inspired drinks—The Localist (with gin) the Fascist Killer (with bourbon), and the People’s Punch (a rum drink).
The menu had not been finalized as of last night, but hopefully the hors d’oeuvres served at the preview are indicative of what’s to come—amazing wood-grilled chicken thigh, oyster po’ boy, grilled skirt steak, tempura shrimp, chorizo with marmalade.
The décor is vintage-eclectic, with red velvet Victorian couches, faux rawhide booths, beaded chandeliers, Parisian wallpaper and an old time radio console. The neon sign from the Video Americain store, the former tenant of the space (as well an ice cream shop) hangs in the outdoor patio.
The restaurant, which seats 90 people (plus 16 at the bar and 40 on the patio), opens Sunday, December 9 at 5 p.m.
