Updated – Dec. 28 – A growing chain of fast-casual pizza restaurants is bringing its concept to Bethesda.

Pieology is planning to open its second Montgomery County location at 4922 Elm St., in the former 100 Montaditos space, according to Bethesda Row owner Federal Realty’s tenant roster.

The California-based restaurant chain is one of several companies opening dozens or in some cases, hundreds of locations across the country to woo customers with Chipotle-style, fast-baked, make-your-own pizzas and will join the local ranks of similar chains such as &pizza and MOD Pizza. As of this summer, Pieology had about 100 locations nationwide and plans to open 700 within five years, according to BuzzFeed News.

The restaurant will have some additional local competition for pizza customers—Mamma Lucia, which offers a similar New York-style thin crust pizza, is next door to Pieology’s 2,600-square-foot space.

A Pieology location opened this fall on Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg. A Pieology spokeswoman said in an email the Bethesda location is planning a spring 2017 opening.
