Matchbox Vintage Pizza Bistro announced Monday it will open in downtown Silver Spring in early 2019, occupying the Ellsworth Drive space being vacated by Hen Quarter, which has closed.

The new restaurant at 919 Ellsworth Drive will be the restaurant’s group’s 12th location, marking the beginning of an expansion in the Washington, D.C., area, made possible by a joint venture with Thompson Hospitality, according to a press release from Matchbox. The 15-year-old restaurant group, which operates 11 locations including those in Rockville, D.C., and Northern Virginia, “plans to open several new restaurants and refresh existing properties in the D.C. metropolitan area within the next year, with an eye toward smaller, neighborhood-focused spaces,” the release said.

“As a Northern Virginia-based restaurant company, Thompson Hospitality shares the values, vision and regional pride we hold dear at Matchbox,” Matchbox president Harvey Metro said. “Our partnership has felt like a natural step toward becoming the best version of ourselves and has enabled us to pursue a more deliberate path of expanding the brand. While we continue to grow, we’re also looking back 15 years and targeting growth in the D.C. metropolitan area, a market both favored and familiar to us, and are on track to open at least three locations in the next year.”

The 6,000-square-foot, 150-seat Ellsworth Drive location, which is  in the heart of downtown Silver Spring’s dining and entertainment district, “exemplifies the direction future Matchbox restaurants are heading in, keeping the focus on atmosphere and experience rather than size,” the release said.

Hen Quarter, which was owned by Thompson Hospitality, opened in December 2016 in the space formerly occupied by Austin Grill, also owned by Thompson. Hen Quarter announced its closing Monday on its Facebook page.

“We are sad to announce our Silver Spring location is closed as of today, however a new concept will be coming soon!,” the post said. “Thank you to all our customers, and don’t forget to check out our Alexandria or DC locations!”
