Gaithersburg drug company gets $2 billion federal contract

Emergent BioSolutions, a biopharmaceutical company that makes products addressing public health, has received a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services worth $2 billion.

As reported by The Daily Record, the contract is worth 10 years and will ensure that the company continues to supply a smallpox vaccine. The vaccine is the only one licensed by the Food and Drug Administration for people determined to be at high risk for infection from the disease.

The number of doses that will be supplied depends on timing and pricing terms at the health and human services secretary’s discretion, according to a news release from the company.
