FedEx Ground, the ground delivery branch of FedEx, is celebrating the opening of a new distribution center in Gaithersburg Thursday. The new facility, according to a press release, is 300,000 square feet and is part of the company’s plan to expand its network.

There are more than 150 employees, according to the press release, and 12 service provider businesses that employ 150 drivers and staff. Positions will be added as demand for service grows.

The Gaithersburg facility has a separate material handling system designed to sort large packages such as furniture and TVs.

Federal, state and local officials, along with representatives from FedEx, will attend Thursday’s ceremony.

Montgomery County Alcoholic Beverage Services honored

Montgomery County Alcoholic Beverage Services [ABS] was recognized for its alcohol enforcement by StateWays, a trade magazine focusing on alcohol regulation. ABS announced the award Tuesday in a press release.

“ABS has a proactive enforcement team that works collaboratively with other County agencies to help streamline processes, educate the public and protect the health and safety of our community,” Director Bob Dorfman wrote.

ABS is responsible for performing inspections and investigations to ensure its more than 1,000 facilities comply with all state and county laws. The agency hosts meetings four times a year to share code compliance information, conducts site visits and makes written recommendations.
