Readers' Pick

As a student at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Stephanie Menick worked in a gift shop at Cabin John Shopping Center & Mall to earn extra spending money. Now the Bethesda resident owns her own gift shop at the same mall.

Occasions, which opened in 2011, sells everything from trendy jewelry and gift baskets to hand-knitted winter hats and the popular Scout line of bags. The antique furniture she uses to display her items is also for sale. And the inventory is constantly changing. “I have a passion for finding unique things I don’t see everywhere,” the 40-year-old says.

Lisa Harwood of Bethesda appreciates Menick’s gift ideas and her beautiful packaging. “I love that store!” Harwood says.

What Menick loves is the knowledge that every time she sells a gift, “we’re making someone’s day a little brighter.”

She previously opened an Occasions store at National Harbor in 2008.

Cabin John Mall, 11325 Seven Locks Road, Potomac, 301-299-8016 (gift basket orders, 301-567-2060),
