What’s the secret to newcomer Sugo Cicchetti’s success?
It’s the same thing that draws people to the Greek restaurants—local mini-chains Cava Mezze and Cava Mezze Grill—that are also owned by Sugo proprietors Ted Xenohristos, Dimitri Moshovitis and Ike Grigoropoulos.
“No matter what we do, no matter what we build, it always comes back to the food,” Xenohristos says.
And that’s the domain of Moshovitis, a talented chef who developed a menu of Italian-inspired small plates at Sugo, including seared scallops, mushroom risotto, Tuscan fried chicken and roasted Brussels sprouts. Moshovitis’ flair for adding creative twists to fresh, simple comfort food shines through at Sugo, just as it does at the trio’s other restaurants.
And there are a lot of crossover fans. Regulars who frequent the threesome’s first Cava Mezze in Rockville, which opened in 2006, are becoming fixtures at Sugo, which opened in May 2012. In fact, repeated requests for the popular lamb chops served at Cava Mezze led the kitchen to add a version to the Sugo menu. And the opposite is happening, too. “Now we have people coming to Cava asking for Brussels sprouts,” Xenohristos says.
