About seven months after the longtime local hardware store Hardware City closed in Kensington, another local chain is almost ready to open in its place.

Strosniders Hardware plans to open at 10504 Connecticut Ave. by Feb. 1, or possibly earlier, depending on final inspections, General Manager Bill Hart III said Wednesday.

Strosniders, which has stores in Bethesda, Potomac and Silver Spring, announced in April that it would take over the space that Hardware City was vacating after 45 years. Hardware City closed in June.

Hart said the store’s interior has changed from the Hardware City days, and a wider selection of items will be available.

“That store hadn’t been remodeled since the 1970s,” he said. “We totally gutted the store. It’s more modern looking, it’s more shoppable with wider aisles, and we’ve stocked it with newer items.”

One remnant from the Hardware City store will be the “familiar faces” of several employees who were hired from the previous store, Hart said.

The Kensington Strosniders will closely resemble the Bethesda location, although at 13,000 square feet, its about 30 percent bigger, allowing for some expanded sections, Hart said. The new store will have a larger offering of plumbing and power tools and a special section for gardening.

The store initially was scheduled to open in the fall, but Hart said the date was pushed back because of permitting problems and delays with the buildout.

Strosniders is a member of the Ace Hardware network, a retailer-owned co-op, meaning it owns a share in the larger company.

Hart said he was excited to open and thinks Strosniders will be a good fit for the area because of its other stores nearby.

“We understand the market very well and I think the community will like it,” he said.

The store will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
