A crash involving at least two vehicles at River Road and Braeburn Parkway in Bethesda on Thursday morning left several people injured, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said.
The injuries were not considered serious, but two or three people were taken to a local hospital, he said.
The crash Thursday morning did not appear to involve a turning vehicle. Piringer said it seemed that one vehicle had rear-ended another, and that at least two vehicles were involved in the crash.
The notorious intersection has been the site of ongoing safety efforts after a 2016 crash killed three members of a Bethesda family. The State Highway Administration plans to add concrete curbs to prevent cars from cutting across River Road and to install pedestrian and traffic signals next year. Flashing warning lights had earlier been activated at the intersection.
The intersection is widely used by Walt Whitman High School students and families arriving and leaving the school by a back entrance. Community members and Walt Whitman Principal Alan Goodwin have long pushed for safety measures at the intersection.
