Mix Bar and Grille, a casual restaurant in the Potomac Promenade shopping center, has closed, owner Ramiro Paez said Monday.
Paez said he closed the restaurant for good early last week. He said he made the decision because the restaurant couldn’t keep up with the high rent charged for the Falls Road location.
“I just can’t afford to lose money every single month,” he said. “We have a huge rent and the landlord did not want to negotiate with us.”
Local blog Store Reporter first reported that Mix Bar and Grille appeared to be closed after learning there was no sign of activity at the restaurant dating from before Valentine’s Day on Wednesday.
Paez said his second location of Mix Bar and Grille in downtown Silver Spring remains open.
Mix opened in fall 2013 after Eddie Benaim, an original owner, and Paez transformed Benaim’s upscale restaurant Bezu, which served French and modern American fare, into a more casual, less pricey eatery. Mix expanded to Silver Spring on the corner of Georgia and Thayer avenues in 2015. Benaim had left the business in the years since.
Paez said he was sad to close the Potomac restaurant, but found it wasn’t financially feasible to keep running the restaurant. He said the only reason he kept it open was to pay employees and the landlord.
“Pretty much I was just working to meet the landlord’s rent, so he was happy,” Paez said. “I wasn’t getting any satisfaction out of it, just headaches.”
Meanwhile, he said he has no plans to close the Silver Spring restaurant, and hopes to institute some changes, including introducing a new chef soon.
“It’s healthy,” he said of the Silver Spring location. “The rent is not high like that [of the Potomac location], so it’s able to survive and does well.”
