China Garden, a popular Arlington restaurant, is planning to move to Rockville.
The restaurant looks to open at 1701 Rockville Pike after its Arlington location closes this summer, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. It will take over the former space of outdoor recreation retailer REI, which vacated the space in late April for a larger store in Pike & Rose.
An administrator for the China Garden Facebook page suggested the restaurant will open before October. The Arlington location could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning.
There is another China Garden restaurant in Rockville at 178 Rollins Ave. that is not affiliated with the Arlington restaurant. A spokesman for that restaurant was not available to comment Wednesday on competing against a restaurant of the same name.
The Arlington restaurant, which has long operated in the Rosslyn area, is known for its dim sum, but also serves a full menu of Chinese dishes for carry-out or dining in.
ARLnow reported in the fall that the restaurant seemed to be terminating its lease, and China Garden posted on its Facebook wall at the time that it planned to move to a new location after a previous change in ownership. The Arlington restaurant will close Aug. 1.
“China Garden is committed to maintain and preserve its over 44 year tradition of offering the most authentic and refined Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine and the best dining experience possible,” a spokesperson for the restaurant wrote. “The new venue will provide a more updated and beautiful decor to better host our patrons and event guests.”
