A full-fledged production brewery is coming to a 7,200-square-foot warehouse in Rockville.

Jim Beeman and Keith Beutel are opening 7 Locks Brewing, which they hope will be ready to open on Wilkins Avenue by late July.

Beeman and Beutel were roommates at the University of Maryland and said they’ve been planning the brewery concept for much of the last year. They got their alcohol license Thursday from the Montgomery County Board of License Commissioners.

“It’s a great opportunity. The county has a population that really wants this to be here,” Beeman said. “You look in D.C. You look in Northern Virginia and you look at other counties in Maryland and there are a lot of things going on in the beer industry. But Montgomery County is kind of bereft of this type of operation at this scale.”

Denizens Brewing Co. opened last year in a 7,500-square-foot building in Silver Spring. Beeman said 7 Locks Brewing will operate a 15-barrel brewing system, matching Denizens for the largest in the county.

Production tanks are being fabricated in Wisconsin and should be ready for delivery to Rockville in the first week of June.

Unlike many of the brewpubs around the county, 7 Locks will have a tasting room instead of a full-service restaurant.

Beeman said the brewery will use all American-made equipment and a large part of the business will be generated by partnering with local nonprofits for events and cross-promotion.

“Part of our company ethos is not only drink local but act local,” Beeman said. “Living in Montgomery County, we want to bring stuff that’s new and cool. We don’t want to just have to go into D.C. all the time. Folks here in Rockville want to be able to go just down the road as opposed to driving across the line to get good beer.”
