The owner of Bethesda’s 4935 Bar and Kitchen has plans to take over the space currently occupied by Brasserie Monte Carlo and to open French bistro concept.

Ashish Alfred says he negotiated a deal with the building’s landlord and will open Duck Duck Goose.

The only thing holding the process up is Brasserie Monte Carlo. Martin Benjamin, the owner of the building that houses the restaurant at 7929 Norfolk Ave., said Tuesday that the restaurant’s owner, Sonny Abraham, could continue to operate the longtime French restaurant if he pays the debt he owes on the space.

Benjamin said the situation is being evaluated day-to-day and that he hopes to know about the future of the Woodmont Triangle space soon.

Abraham could not be reached for comment, despite multiple attempts to contact him. Abraham’s cousin, Joe Jawal, who helps out at the restaurant, said last week that Abraham is negotiating with the landlord. Jawal said the restaurant has had a good run in Bethesda.

“Bethesda has been a blessing for us for the last 15 years,” he said. “Not many restaurants last 15 years.”

On Tuesday afternoon, the restaurant remained open for business.

Alfred says the private party business at nearby 4935 Bar and Kitchen has been so successful he decided to pursue his new French concept.

“It’s become Bethesda’s stop for birthdays and private occasions,” Alfred said. “It’s a concept people told me wouldn’t work, but it’s worked very well.” He added that the private events have also allowed him to lower food prices at 4935.

If Alfred takes over the 7929 Norfolk Ave. space, he’s planning a full renovation, which would include opening the kitchen up to the dining room, removing the blue awning outside and adding a “garde manger” or charcuterie station.

The new restaurant would offer lunch and dinner initially, and possibly breakfast in the future, Alfred said.

Alfred opened 4935 Bar and Kitchen on Cordell Avenue in January 2014.
