Montgomery County Public Schools are closed Tuesday due to snow.
Administrative offices are open, but all other school community activities in school buildings are canceled.
Initially, MCPS issued a two-hour delay after light fluffy snow started falling earlier this morning, around 5 a.m. But as snow continued to fall and road conditions worsened, an announcement was made at 8:21 p.m. to close schools.
Gboyinde Onijala, a spokeswoman for MCPS, said Tuesday morning that at the time the decision was made for a 2-hour delay the school system thought it could have its buses ready and get students safely to school.
However, Onijala said, their thinking changed as the forecast changed. Originally the National Weather Service had predicted between 1 to 2 inches of snow for the area, but that was upped to 4 to 6 inches of snow Tuesday morning.
"As the weather forecast was changing we had to reassess what we previously decided," Onijala said. After reassessing the situation the school system decided to close the schools.
