The GEICO insurance company will move its corporate headquarters from the Friendship Heights neighborhood of Chevy Chase to downtown Bethesda in early 2026, according to an email sent by the company Thursday afternoon.

“For the past 65 years, GEICO has called Plaza home. While we have made some enhancements and upgrades over the years, it is no longer suitable for our needs, and we need a more modern, right-sized workspace for our associates,” the memo from GEICO leadership obtained by Bethesda Today from GEICO spokesperson Michael Young said of the company’s corporate offices  at 5260 Western Ave. in Chevy Chase.

According to the email, the new 7272 Wisconsin Ave. location will offer “the latest infrastructure and facilities” and was chosen because of its access to nearby public transit, as well as its proximity to the current office, so that employees will not have to relocate. An exact moving date has not been set, but is slated for early 2026, according to the memo.

The new office location will be part of The Wilson and The Elm, a three-tower, 940,000-square-foot mixed-use office and residential complex with tenants including Fox 5 News, McKay Mortgage C., HiLabs Software and Tatte.

According to the memo, the company’s Real Estate and Facilities Management will begin the process of evaluating options for the future of the current building and surrounding property.

“As a responsible member of the Friendship Heights and Chevy Chase community, we are committed to being a good neighbor and working closely with local officials, community leaders and residents to identify and support property redevelopment that benefits and supports revitalization of the area,” the memo said.

The insurance company has been a fixture of Montgomery County’s economic infrastructure for decades. Bethesda Magazine reported the company was one of the top 10 employers in Montgomery County in 2021 and 2022, employing more than 3,500 people.
