A winter storm warning has been issued for Tuesday for Montgomery County ahead of a storm that may bring 3 to 6 inches of snow to the area, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service office for the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., issued the winter storm warning Monday afternoon for Montgomery County and other parts of the D.C. area. The warning will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday and end at 7 a.m. Wednesday. According to The Washington Post, snow will begin from southwest to northeast, likely coming into the Beltway area around 1 or 2 p.m.
According to a social media post from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, a winter storm warning is issued when heavy snow, sleet or freezing rain is expected.
The Capital Weather Gang, The Washington Post’s weather reporting team, said the snow forecast for the county is from 3 to 6 inches of accumulation, with a 25% chance of 1 to 3 inches and a 25% chance of 6 to 10 inches.
The snowstorm could bring school cancellations across portions of D.C., Maryland and Virginia. According to The Washington Post, Prince George’s County has announced it will dismiss two hours early on Tuesday.
Montgomery County Public Schools announced Tuesday morning that schools would remain open for the full school day with a normal dismissal time. However, school and community-use activities on Tuesday afternoon and evening are canceled. Those activities “include field trips, games, team practices and programs in schools and on school grounds,” the district said in an email.
“During afternoon dismissal, it will be snowing, but icy and unsafe conditions are not expected until late into the evening,” the district said in an email. “Bus transportation may be delayed on some routes because we have instructed drivers to exercise caution when driving during snow conditions that may temporarily impede visibility.”
In addition, after-school child care programs will continue to operate as normal Tuesday. However, the district encouraged families to “pick up their children as soon as possible” and contact their child care provider for more specific information.
Regarding school on Wednesday, the district said announcements and updates will be made before 7 p.m. Tuesday.
MCPS has already extended the school year by one day after the district closed schools for three days due to inclement weather this winter. If there are more closures, additional calendar adjustments would be required.
The county also has activated an extreme cold alert from 7 p.m. Monday until 3 a.m. Thursday, as the wind chill could reach below 32 degrees.
According to the Montgomery County cold alerts website, the county provides a variety of sheltering opportunities for the homeless. Individuals who need help or see someone who does can call the homeless information line at 240-907-2688, the county’s 24-hour Crisis Center at 240-777-4000, the Takoma Park police non-emergency line at 301-270-1100 or the Montgomery County police non-emergency number at 301-279-8000.
