A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a late December stabbing at a Gaithersburg Mexican restaurant, Gaithersburg police said Monday in a statement.
Jovani Ramos of Gaithersburg was arrested Wednesday, according to digital court records, and charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and intoxicated endangerment.
The stabbing occurred on the evening of Dec. 26 at Cancun Restaurant at 117 East Diamond Ave. in Gaithersburg. Police responded to the restaurant at around 7:30 p.m. for a report of a stabbing, according to the statement.
Police said the stabbing stemmed from a verbal argument between an unknown man and the victim, which escalated into a physical altercation. The man allegedly “brandished a knife” and cut the victim’s face.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
During an investigation, detectives identified Ramos as a suspect, the statement said.
An arrest warrant was issued for Ramos on Jan. 27, and he was arrested two days later, according to digital court records. Ramos is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Boyds where he awaits a Feb. 28 preliminary hearing in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville.
A public defender is representing Ramos, according to digital court records. The Maryland Office of the Public Defender did not immediately respond Monday afternoon to a request for comment.
