County police: Man posed as police officer in Silver Spring armed home invasion

Suspect displayed badge, carried a handgun, demanded money from victim, police say

Montgomery County police are searching for a man who allegedly impersonated a police officer during a Wednesday home invasion in the Kemp Mill neighborhood of Silver Spring, police said in a statement Thursday.

At approximately 12:50 p.m., officers responded to the 200 block of Hannes Street for the report of a home invasion, the statement said. The victim reported that upon opening the door to their apartment after hearing a knock, the suspect entered the residence and produced a police badge from his jacket.

While inside the residence, the suspect allegedly threatened the victim with a black handgun and demanded money, the statement said. The suspect then left the residence. Police did not say whether the suspect stole property.

According to police, responding officers canvassed the surrounding neighborhood and issued a lookout for the suspect but were unable to locate him.

Police described the suspect as “a Hispanic male, approximately 45 to 50 years old, 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a stocky build, salt-and-pepper hair, and a beard,” according to the statement. The suspect was last seen wearing a baseball cap, surgical mask and jacket, all black;  dark jeans; and a striped button-down shirt.

County police ask anyone with information regarding the suspect or the crime to submit a tip on  the Crime Solvers of Montgomery County website or to call 1-866-411-8477. Tips can remain anonymous and a reward of up to $10,000 is offered for information that leads to an arrest.
