Two restaurant chains shuttered Montgomery County locations this week as TGI Fridays in Rockville and Jerry’s Subs and Pizza in downtown Silver Spring closed their doors.
The closure of the two restaurants was first reported by the MoCo Show.
A letter posted to the door Tuesday of the longtime TGI Fridays’ Rockville location at 12147 Rockville Pike said: “We regret to inform you that Fridays has made the difficult decision to close our doors … effective January 27, 2025. We are extremely grateful to our loyal Guests and our Team Members at our Rockville restaurant.”
The letter did not provide a reason why the chain closed the Rockville location.
In January 2024, DC News Now reported that TGI Fridays was closing 36 “underperforming” restaurants across the United States, five of which were in Maryland and Virginia. The Rockville location was spared from the closures at the time.
Last fall, TGI Fridays filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a sign of financial troubles that came as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, TGI Fridays Executive Chairman Rohit Manocha said in a November press release.
The release did not mention restaurant closures in addition to those announced in early 2024 but said the filing would help the fast-casual chain focus on “restructuring” to “ensure the long-term viability of the brand.”
TGI Fridays did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request for comment from Bethesda Today on the Rockville closure. The restaurant is still listed on the chain’s website.
One other TGI Fridays remains open in the county at 12281 Tech Road in Silver Spring.
The last of Jerry’s Subs and Pizza
The county also said goodbye this week to its last remaining Jerry’s Subs and Pizza at 8517 Colesville Road in downtown Silver Spring.
The shop, which opened in 2019, sat across from the former Discovery Communications headquarters and near the Silver Spring transit center and Metro station.
According to the MoCo Show, the sub and pizza shop was expected to close Friday. However, it appeared Tuesday the restaurant had already shuttered, with patrons unable to enter and phone calls left unanswered, the MoCo Show reporte.
The Source of the Spring reported the closure resulted from a dispute over the shop’s lease renewal.
Three Jerry’s Subs and Pizza shops remain open in the state, according to the chain’s website.
Jerry’s was founded in 1954 and opened its first shop just outside of Washington, D.C., the chain’s website said. According to the MoCo Show, the location was on University Boulevard in Wheaton.
