Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) announced Friday the school year will be extended by one day after the district closed schools three days this month due to weather – one more than allotted in the 2024-2025 calendar, according to a statement from the district.
“This January has been a challenging month for our community, with freezing temperatures, snow and icy conditions affecting our daily routines,” the statement said. “We can now look forward to a welcome warm-up in the coming days; however, we must make a necessary adjustment to the school calendar.”
After the first snowstorm of 2025 brought 6 to 8 inches to the county, MCPS closed school for three days from Jan. 6 to 8.
According to the 2024-2025 school calendar, the district set aside two inclement weather days, both of which were used. With the third snow day, the district had to choose one of the following days to use as a make-up day — Jan. 29, March 31, June 6, June 16-18, June 20 and June 23. The last day of school for students was scheduled for June 13 and was scheduled to be an early release day.
In the Friday announcement, the district said the make-up day would be held June 16 and it would be an early release day. June 13 will be a full instructional day.
If there are more closures, additional calendar adjustments would need to be made. MCPS could request a state waiver from providing the state-required 180 days of school per year, but would need to show efforts to make up the lost instructional time, which would include adjusting the school calendar, according to the statement.
