Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown was evacuated and closed Thursday morning due to a broken pipe that left the school without water and heat, according to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) spokesperson Chris Cram.

Cram said in an email to Bethesda Today on Thursday morning the middle school was evacuated when a fire alarm sounded due to a broken pipe. Cram said the cause of the broken pipe was unknown.

Students and staff were evacuated to Lake Seneca Elementary School, which is less than half a mile from the middle school located at 13737 Wisteria Drive. Families were notified at about 9:25 a.m. via text message and email that the school would close at 10 a.m., Cram said.

Buses were provided and parents were instructed to pick up their children at Lake Seneca Elementary.

Cram said MCPS would prioritize fixing the problem with the hopes of reopening the school on Friday, but he could not definitively say when the school would reopen.
