Sligo Creek Parkway between Maple Avenue and Piney Branch Road remains closed to traffic due to ongoing repairs to a broken water main, Montgomery County Park Police Capt. Tracy Lieberman said Thursday morning.
The road closure began Wednesday afternoon following the water main and gas line break, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) officials.
According to Lieberman, the gas line has been fixed and crews continue to work on repairs to the water main. She noted that there is ice on the roadway, so after the water main is repaired, the roadway will be treated before reopening.
MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said on social media at roughly 3:40 p.m., that a water main break occurred, as well as a broken gas line. At roughly 4 p.m., Piringer said MCFRS was on scene with Washington Gas and was awaiting WSSC Water.
According to radio transmissions, MCFRS was on scene of the gas leak at roughly 2:40 p.m. and Washington Gas crews were blocking off the road. At about 3:46 p.m., MCFRS crews reported over radio transmissions a water main break occurred and was interfering with gas crews addressing the leak.
According to radio transmissions, the water main break was flowing directly into where Washington Gas crews were working.
WSSC Water has experienced 366 water main breaks and leaks between Jan. 1 and Monday, raising concerns about the age of water pipes in Montgomery County.
