MCPS to open schools on time Friday

District hasn’t chosen make-up day for this week’s third closure

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will open as regularly scheduled Friday after Sunday’s snowstorm led to three snow days and a two-hour delay on Thursday, the district announced Thursday afternoon in an email.

According to the announcement, childcare programs held before and after school and community use activities will occur Friday as scheduled.

Schools were closed Monday and Tuesday after Sunday night’s storm delivered more than 5 inches of snow to the area. Classes also were canceled Wednesday due to “snow levels and persistently cold temperatures” that made it difficult for MCPS to clear snow and ice from parking lots and walkways around schools, the district said when announcing Wednesday’s closure.

MCPS delayed school start times by two hours Thursday “out of an abundance of caution due to extremely cold temperatures and overnight refreezing causing dangerous conditions in some areas,” the district said.

According to the 2024-2025 school calendar, the district set aside two inclement weather days, both of which were used this week. After Wednesday’s closure, the district will have to choose one of the following days to use as a make-up day — Jan. 29, March 31, June 6, June 16-18, June 20 and June 23. The last day of school for students is scheduled for June 13.

In an emailed statement on Thursday to Bethesda Today, MCPS spokesperson Liliana Lopez said MCPS has not determined which date will be designated as a make-up day.
