MCPS offers emergency meals for students Wednesday

18 schools open for food distribution

January 8, 2025 11:25 a.m.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will utilize 18 schools to provide emergency meal services Wednesday after snow and ice kept schools closed for a third day, according to a statement from the school district.

MCPS announced Tuesday afternoon that all schools and offices would be closed Wednesday after a winter storm brought more than 5 inches to the area on Monday. Wednesday’s closure marks the third day this week that schools have been closed following Sunday night’s snowstorm. As of Wednesday morning, MCPS hasn’t called a snow day for Thursday. According to the MCPS website, an evening decision to close schools will occur by 7 p.m., but if necessary, a morning decision can be made by 5 a.m.

Meals will be distributed between noon and 2 p.m., according to the statement. Parents, guardians and students may pick up the food for MCPS children and youth ages 18 and younger. The meals are “grab-and-go” and heating instructions will be provided.

According to the announcement, MCPS can “safely operate these locations to support our community” thanks to snow and ice removal teams.
