MCPS cancels after-school activities due to inclement weather

Schools to close on time Friday

January 3, 2025 12:35 p.m.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) canceled all after-school activities on Friday, although all schools will close at their regularly scheduled times, according to an email sent to MCPS families Friday morning.

Although the email didn’t specify why after-school activities were canceled, MCPS Spokesperson Liliana Lopez told MoCo360 it was due to pending inclement weather. According to the email, all after-school and evening school and community activities in school buildings are canceled. Daycare programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled.

The Baltimore/Washington, D.C., National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook Friday morning for central and southeast Montgomery County. According to the National Weather Service, snow showers or squalls, a brief, strong storm that often brings rain or snow, could impact near and north of Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon and evening. On Thursday afternoon, the weather service’s Baltimore and Washington, D.C., office issued a winter weather advisory for portions of central, north central, northeast and northern Maryland from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Montgomery County was not included in the advisory but is expected to see accumulations of less than an inch of snow, according to the weather service’s snowfall outlook map. According to the weather service announcement, the snow will “traverse the region” from the afternoon into the evening and fall for about an hour or two. According to WTOP, the D.C. region will see a mix of rain, sleet and snow between 1 and 6 p.m. In nearby Frederick County, public schools and offices are closing two hours early due to inclement weather.
