A 27-year-old Lanham man was arrested and charged Friday with arson in connection with a November vehicle fire at the Camden Apartments in Rockville, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Edward Kamara was charged with second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning and malicious destruction of property over $1,000, Piringer told MoCo360 on Monday.

MCFRS crews were dispatched at roughly 9 p.m. Nov. 19 to the Camden Apartments at 9709 Key West Ave., Piringer said, for reports of a structure fire. According to Piringer, the crews discovered a vehicle on fire in the upper levels of a parking garage.

No one was injured, but the fire was suspicious in nature because there was no mechanical reason for the fire and it wasn’t located in the car’s engine, Piringer said.

Piringer said the vehicle fire was “well-involved,” meaning the fire had spread through the majority of the car and also damaged the building. The fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damage, he said.

An investigation by MCFRS fire/explosive investigators allegedly led to Kamara, who was arrested and charged without incident, Piringer said.

According to online court records, Kamara is being held without bond. He is being represented by the Montgomery County Public Defender’s Office, according to online court records. The public defender’s office didn’t immediately respond to phone calls Monday afternoon requesting comment.
