No suspect is in custody following a Christmas Day shooting that injured a man on the 800 block of University Boulevard East Wednesday evening, Montgomery County police said Thursday morning in a statement emailed to MoCo360.
Around 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday, 911 dispatchers received a call from someone reporting that a person has been shot, the statement said.
The caller told dispatchers that the shooting occurred near the 7-Eleven and described the shooter as a man wearing black clothing and a ski mask, according to police radio transmissions.
Police found the victim, who was “not alert” but breathing, inside an apartment building at 802 University Blvd. East, according to radio transmissions. Officers requested a Spanish speaker to head to the scene as well as a K9 unit.
Around 6:45 p.m., officers told dispatch that “one or more suspects” may have run farther into apartment building, according to the transmissions. Shortly after, an officer said a woman at the scene told them that the suspect had left the apartment on foot.
Police set up a perimeter in the area including around University Boulevard, Piney Branch Road and Carroll Avenue, according to the transmissions. Police also notified Prince George’s County police about the shooting and to be on the look out for the suspect, who officers said ran toward the neighboring county.
County police also requested Prince Geoge’s County police’s helicopter “Guardian” to search the area by air, according to the transmissions. About 10 minutes after the request police were notified that the helicopter was not in commission at the time.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and transported the man who was shot to an area hospital, according to police. The man suffered “serious but non-life-threatening injuries.”
This is an active and ongoing investigation.
