A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory Monday morning for the county and portions of Washington, D.C.; Northern Virginia; and central, northeast and northern Maryland.

The county emergency management office advised residents to “expect light to moderate accumulations of wintry precipitation that will make sidewalks and roads icy,” according to a social media post. Residents should also use caution when traveling.

According to the advisory, ice accumulation amounting to a few hundredths of an inch is expected along with freezing rain. In addition, a dusting of snow is possible.

“Precipitation begins as light freezing rain early Tuesday morning … then begins along the Interstate 95 corridor around or just before sunrise,” the advisory said. Late Tuesday morning, the precipitation will transition to a mix of rain and freezing rain and last into the early afternoon.

The National Weather Service is urging those traveling by motor vehicle to slow down, use caution and be prepared for slippery roadways.

“If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury,” the advisory states.

During Tuesday, the temperatures will reach a high of 42 degrees, according to the weather service. Overnight and into Christmas Day, the weather will be mostly cloudy with a low around 30 degrees.
