With the help of drones and a K9 unit, Montgomery County police officers arrested a man allegedly involved in the attempted robbery of three people in downtown Silver Spring on Tuesday night, according to police.

District 3 police Commander Jason Cokinos shared the news of the arrest on social media late Tuesday night.

At approximately 7:40 p.m., officers in the area observed an attempted robbery occurring on Georgia Avenue near the intersection of Eastern Avenue, which is close to the Washington, D.C., line, police said Wednesday morning in an email to MoCo360. Cokinos said the officers were in plain clothes.

The first victim was able to run away from the suspect and the robbery was unsuccessful, police said.

In response, police deployed Raven 1, District 3’s drone, to patrol the area, as well as a K9 unit, according to the statement. Cokinos wrote the drone “helped track the suspect who attempted two additional robberies,” which were also unsuccessful when the victims ran away.

No injuries were reported, according to police, and the suspect was taken into custody later Tuesday night.

Cokinos noted the suspect, an adult male, was transported to the county’s central processing unit in Rockville and charged with three counts of attempted robbery. Police did not identify the man in custody nor provide his age or where he lives.
