Metro Red Line trains were single-tracking in both directions Tuesday morning as Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews investigated an electrical arcing incident in the tunnel between the Bethesda and Medical Center stations, according to officials.

“Trains are single tracking every 6-12 minutes between Medical Center and Friendship Heights because of a track problem outside Bethesda. Expect delays in both directions. Metro crews are on scene working to resolve the issue,” Metro officials posted Tuesday morning on social media.

Shortly after 11 a.m., Metro posted that some Red Line trains are offloading at the Farragut North station to minimize train traffic. “Use Red Line to Shady Grove to continue trip,” the post said.

Normal train service had resumed as of about 1:15 p.m., according to Metro.

MCFRS crews were dispatched to the Medical Center station in Bethesda around 10:39 a.m. for an arcing insulator, according to fire department radio transmissions.

MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote Tuesday morning that MCFRS crews on scene at the Bethesda and Medical Center stations did not find fire and smoke. Metro crews are handling the problem as a maintenance issue, he said.
