Joe’s Noodle House, a Rockville staple for Sichuan-style Chinese cuisine for decades, will close Dec. 30, according to restaurant employee Ging Xu.

Store Reporter first reported the news of the restaurant’s closure in early December.

According to Xu, the restaurant at 1488-C Rockville Pike is closing because its chef is retiring and its owner is planning to return to Taiwan. Xu said Monday the chef and owner were ready to step away.

For years, Joe’s Noodle House was regarded as one of the top Chinese eateries in the area. In 2017, the restaurant ranked second on The Washington Post’s list of top 10 favorite Chinese restaurants in the Washington, D.C., area.

The restaurant offers Sichuan specialties such as soft bean curd with spicy sauce and hot beef jerky, Mapo tofu and Dan Dan noodles.

Since news of the closing has spread, longtime customers have been stopping by the restaurant, Xu said.

And social media users have commented on the Montgomery County, Maryland Reddit page about the impending closure. “Oh man, that’s a loss,” one person wrote under a Reddit post about the closure. Another wrote: “Joe’s had the closest to some favored childhood dishes for me… .”

According to the eatery’s website, Joe’s is taking reservations to dine in for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
