Volunteer fire departments visit neighborhoods in December

This December, Santa’s reindeer are taking a break as the jolly ‘ole elf joins the Montgomery County police department and local volunteer fire departments on rides through neighborhoods throughout the county to spread holiday cheer.

Here’s when and where to catch Santa on his neighborhood visits:

Cabin John Fire Department

With the help of the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department, Santa and his elves are heading to various neighborhoods in the Cabin John community through Dec. 20.

The Santa Run is a department tradition that has lasted more than 40 years, according to the department’s website. Santa will head out starting at 5:30 p.m. each evening.

Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department

Mr. Claus is making his rounds in the Gaithersburg and Washington Grove communities on Saturdays and Sundays this month. According to the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department’s website, there are four more opportunities to catch Santa on Saturday and Sunday and Dec. 21 and 22. The rides run from 5 to 9 p.m.

“We attempt to visit as many neighborhoods as possible, but unfortunately we cannot get down every street due to time and space limitations. Inclement weather may cause us to postpone or cancel a night,” the department said on its website.

Glen Echo Fire Department

Every day through Sunday, Santa will be escorted around the Glen Echo community with help from the Glen Echo Fire Department. Check out this link to see what days Santa is heading to your neighborhood.

Hillandale Volunteer Fire Department

Santa has begun visiting neighborhoods in the Silver Spring area with the Hillandale Volunteer Fire Department. The next Santa rides will occur at 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday in six different neighborhoods.

Kensington Volunteer Fire Department

Santa will visit the Southwest Kensington and Chevy Chase View communities with the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 20.

Rockville Volunteer Fire Department

In neighborhoods across Rockville, Santa is spreading holiday cheer atop a Rockville Volunteer Fire Department fire truck. According to the department’s website, the Santa Run is a 70-year tradition. Later this month, the department will host a Hanukkah Fire Truck Parade on Dec. 30.

This year’s Santa Run will be held every day until Dec. 24.

Residents should “not follow Santa in your car in attempts to get his attention; this is very dangerous and distracts the reindeer, which may cause an accident,” the department said on its website.

Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department

In the Sandy Spring area, Santa will join the local volunteer fire department on rides from 5 to 9 p.m. through neighborhoods from Tuesday until Dec. 22.

On Dec. 29, the department is expected to hold a Hanukkah Fire Truck Parade. More information will be provided later this month, the department said on its website.
