Maryland State Police are investigating the early Tuesday death of a man who was struck and killed while walking along the inner loop of the Beltway near University Boulevard in Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service officials and a statement from police.
Around 3:30 a.m., state troopers responded to the area at Exit 29 for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, state police said Tuesday in a statement.
At approximately 3:40 a.m., MCFRS crews were dispatched to the crash, according to MCFRS Assistant Chief Dan Ogren.
Ogren told MoCo360 Tuesday the man who as struck was pronounced dead at the scene, but did not provide other details about the pedestrian. Police are withholding his identity until the next of kin have been notified.
According to state police, the driver of the Ford vehicle that struck the pedestrian remained on the scene after the crash. Police said a preliminary investigation found the pedestrian was “on foot” when struck on the Beltway.
The police statement did not provide details about the type of vehicle that struck the pedestrian or where on the roadway the pedestrian was walking.
State police transported the deceased man to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, according to a state police spokesperson.
Following the crash, the three right lanes of the inner loop at University Boulevard were closed to traffic for several hours, causing significant traffic delays, according to a social media post by the county’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
By 7:30 a.m., all lanes of the inner loop at University Boulevard had reopened, the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination program posted on social media.
