Mother charged with murder in reported infant drowning in Chevy Chase, police say

Officers responded Sunday to Summit Avenue incident

Montgomery County detectives have charged a 37-year-old mother with the murder in the reported drowning death Sunday of her 3-month-old infant in Chevy Chase, police said Monday in a statement.

Mackenzie Rose Colgan is facing a first-degree murder charge and is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville while she awaits a bond hearing, police said.

Colgan’s attorney, Stephen Mercer, did not immediately respond to MoCo360’s call and email requests for comment Monday afternoon.

According to police, officers and Montgomery Fire and Rescue Service crews responded shortly after noon to the 7300 block of Summit Avenue for a call from the infant’s father “claiming Colgan had drowned their infant while giving the baby a bath.”

Officer located the infant upon arrival and the child was transported to the hospital, where additional life-saving measures failed, according to police.

Detectives responding to the scene identified Colgan as a suspect and she was taken into custody, police said.

The infant was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore where an was scheduled for Monday to determine the cause and manner of death, the statement said.
