A woman died Friday morning in a fire in an apartment building in the Asbury Methodist Village retirement community in Gaithersburg, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS).
MCFRS crews responded shortly before 7 a.m. to the report of a fire on the sixth floor of a high-rise building at 407 Russell Ave., according to radio transmissions. The location is the site of the Mund Apartments in the retirement community.
MCFRS Assistant Chief Dan Ogren said Friday morning that a woman died after possibly catching herself on fire while cooking.
The fire was quickly extinguished and there was no extension into other parts of the building, he said. Residents who had been evacuated were allowed to return to the building.
