County police ‘not holding anything back’ for holiday shopping safety enforcement effort

During the holiday season Montgomery County police are enhancing their presence in and around retail shopping centers in the county to ensure shopper and employee safety, according to Chief Marc Yamada.

“The districts are deploying a wide range of our resources. We are not holding anything back,” he told 7News Wednesday. “That includes patrol officers, foot patrol, bike patrol, plain clothes officers, all of our camera systems and our Drone as First Responder” program.

Yamada also mentioned the department is still investigating the death of Charles Joseph Reynolds who was killed just before Christmas in 2022 outside of the Wayne Avenue parking garage in downtown Silver Spring. The case remains open and Yamada urged potential witnesses to contact the department. [WJLA 7News]

County to waive adoption fees at animal shelter at mid-December event

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center will waive all fees at a pet adoption event to be held Dec. 14 and 15. The event will be at the shelter at 7312 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. Check out which dogs are available at this link. Appointments for the event can be made at this link.

Toy drive for Hurricane Helene victims to be held at Rio Lakefront Saturday

Tidewater Disaster Response, a Fairfax-based nonprofit, is teaming up with emergency responders from Montgomery County to collect toys for children in North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene. There are more than 550 children in the state’s Ashe County who are in need, according to Costa Sardelis, a logistics coordinator for the nonprofit. The “Fill the Boat” toy drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Rio Lakefront at 9811 Washingtonian Blvd. in Gaithersburg. [WTOP]
