A Silver Spring woman was arrested and charged in connection with the death of a woman in a May two-car collision at the intersection of the exit for state Route 200 and Briggs Chaney Road, Montgomery County police announced Monday.

Police took Jovannie McCarthy of Silver Spring into custody on Sunday and charged her with criminally negligent manslaughter by vehicle, police said in a statement. McCarthy was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville, where she is being held without bond pending a 1 p.m. bond review hearing Monday, according to the police statement.

A police spokesperson on Monday morning said it took months to make an arrest because cases involving collisions “take time.”

According to the statement, at roughly 12:45 a.m. May 8, a blue 2006 Honda Accord was exiting westbound on state Road 200, also known as the Intercounty Connector, onto Briggs Chaney Road when the car crossed the west and eastbound lanes and struck a 2003 Volkswagen that was traveling east on Briggs Chaney Road.

The adult female passenger in the Volkswagen, 35-year-old Kiara Cheeks of Washington, D.C., was transported to a local hospital where she later died, according to police.

Police said McCarthy was identified as the driver of the Honda. McCarthy did not have a lawyer listed in online court records as of Monday morning.

Criminally negligent manslaughter by vehicle is a misdemeanor and carries a conviction of up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000, according to Maryland law.
