Thanksgiving closures: What you need to know

Public transit operating on reduced schedule

Some Montgomery County offices will be closed and services will be changed for this week’s Thanksgiving holiday. From bus schedules to trash pickup, here’s everything you need to know:

Transit

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Ride On buses and Ride On extRa Pink and extRa Lime buses will run on a “Sunday schedule” on Thursday, which can be viewed in detail on MCDOT’s website.

The Ride On Flash bus service’s Orange Route will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule. The Blue Route will not be in service.

Ride On extRa (Route 101) and Flex bus service will not be in service.

MCDOT offices, the TRiPS Silver Spring commuter store and the TRiPS mobile commuter store will be closed Thursday. Service will resume as usual on Friday.

All county-owned public parking garages and parking meters will be free Thursday.

Metro stations will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight Thursday, operating on a reduced Sunday schedule at all stations. Red Line trains will run every 10 minutes all day. Regular service will resume Friday. Metrobuses will also operate on a “Sunday schedule.”

Face of the Week

Parking will be free at all Metro-owned parking lots and garages Thursday. Regular weekday fare will apply to ride Metro trains and buses.

The Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) train will be closed Thursday. The Penn Line will operate on a “Saturday schedule” on Friday, and there will be no service on the Brunswick and Camden lines.

Schools, offices, recreation

Montgomery County Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and resume classes on Monday.

County government offices, state offices and courts, State Motor Vehicle Administration offices and Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program stations, county libraries, Alcohol Beverage Services stores and the Department of Permitting Services all will be closed Thursday.

There will be no county-provided trash and recycling collections on Thursday. Collections for the remainder of the week will slide one day, with the final collections on Saturday. The Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center will be closed Thursday.

The Open Parkways program will be extended for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. During this time, parkways are open to pedestrians and bicyclists and closed to motor vehicles. Impacted roads include Beach Drive between Knowles Avenue and Cedar Lane, which will be closed to vehicles from 9 a.m. Thursday through 4 p.m. Sunday, and Sligo Creek Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road and between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard West, which will be closed to vehicles from 9 a.m. Thursday through 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Montgomery Parks headquarters and permits office and customer service office will be closed Thursday. All county recreation centers and senior centers will be closed Thursday and Friday. Aquatic centers will be closed Thursday and reopen Friday.

Parks, trails, gardens, nature center trails and outdoor nature play areas, playgrounds, dog parks, skate parks, outdoor exercise stations and outdoor tennis/pickleball and basketball courts will remain open Thursday.

The inline hockey rink at Ridge Road Recreation Park in Germantown and street hockey/futsal rink at Dewey Local Park in Silver Spring will be open pending reservations.

Picnic shelters and campfire rings will remain available for rental Thursday at several locations.

The Little Bennett campground in Clarksburg, Cabin John Ice Rink, Wheaton Ice Arena and South Germantown Driving Range will remain open Thursday.

The annual holiday Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton closed Monday and will reopen Friday. The Brookside Gardens Visitor Center and Observatory will be closed Thursday and Friday.
