Bark Social, the bar where patrons could socialize with their dogs, announced Thursday night on social media that it was closing all of its locations, including its venue in North Bethesda, and entering bankruptcy.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye,” the company wrote in an Instagram post Thursday night addressed to “our community.”

“After years of hospitality and being the gathering spot for our dog-loving communities, Bark Social will be closing our doors at the end of today,” the post said. An email sent Thursday night to patrons said Bark Social was closed “until further notice.”

The company noted that as a small start-up company, it depended on investors to “fuel” its growth. It was “in the middle of a growth round when financing that was expected fell through.”

“To do the right by its team members who are the heart and soul of the company, Bark Social has made the tough decision to close its doors today and will enter bankruptcy,” the post said.

Bark Social at 935 Prose St. in the Pike & Rose neighborhood opened in the fall of 2020. The membership-based dog park and lounge offered food and drinks for customers and their canines and featured an evening “Yappy Hour” and other special events.

“To our community, Bark Social has been more than a dog bar—it’s been a home for so many friendships, wagging tails, and unforgettable memories. We are endlessly grateful for the love and support from each of you who made our space special,” the company added in the Thursday night email. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of our pack.”
