An elderly woman died after she “apparently caught on fire” Thursday night in a blaze in a home on Livingston Drive in Wheaton, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer and radio transmissions.

MCFRS crews responded to reports of a house fire in the 12100 block of Livingston Drive as well as reports of a person on fire on the home’s porch shortly after 5:20 p.m., according to the radio transmissions.

Piringer wrote Thursday night on social media that a neighbor called 911 after the elderly woman “self rescued” by leaving the home in the 12100 block of Livingston Drive.

MCFRS crews found the woman outside suffering from “critical burn injuries.” She did not survive, Piringer said.

Firefighters battled a fire on the first floor and porch of the one-story single-family home, extinguishing the blaze by about 5:45 p.m., he said. Damage was estimated at about $250,000.

Fire investigators were on the scene, according to radio transmissions.
