A Gaithersburg man is facing a charge of negligent manslaughter in the death of a Germantown father who was killed July 20 in a two-vehicle collision, Montgomery County police said Thursday in a statement.
Agustin E. Jaramillo Lopez, 45, was charged in the death of Isacc Akomanyi, 39, who died in the Gaithersburg crash, according to police. He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville. The statement did not say when he had been arrested. Attorney information for Jaramillo Lopez was not available Thursday afternoon.
An investigation of the collision revealed that on the night of July 20, Jaramillo Lopez was driving a black 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck at 98.2 mph in a 40-mph zone when he allegedly struck a black 2016 Nissan Altima driven by Akomanyi on North Frederick Avenue near Travis Avenue, police said.
Detectives have determined the pickup truck was traveling northbound on North Frederick Avenue when it collided with the Nissan Altima, which was also traveling northbound, according to police.
The investigation found that Jaramillo Lopez’s blood alcohol content was allegedly nearly twice the legal limit at the time of the collision, the statement said.
Gaithersburg police officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded shortly after 10 p.m. to a report of a collision at the location. Akomanyi was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police. Jaramillo Lopez and a passenger in the Nissan received non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to an area hospital.
A GoFundMe page for Akomanyi’s family has raised $2,600 as of Thursday. According to the page set up by his friend Anna Akomeah, Akomanyi had moved to Germantown from Ghana to live with his uncle and provide for his wife, Mavis, and 3-year-old son, Aden, who remain in Ghana.
