Expert says AI may have played role in Marriott layoff decision

Roland Rust, a professor at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, estimates that Bethesda hotel chain Marriott’s decision to lay off at least 800 people in corporate positions may be due to the rising prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI). Rust said the company may be replacing employees who handle data analysis, reports and other similar work with AI software systems to do the same work. [WTOP]

Talbot Avenue Bridge event highlights legacy of segregation

Neighbors who once lived in racially segregated Silver Spring neighborhoods walked together during Saturday’s Talbot Avenue Bridge lantern walk, where residents walked across the newly reopened bridge that connects the communities.
