A man with a “history of dangerous behavior” was arrested Sunday after a standoff with police ended peacefully outside a Germantown apartment complex, Montgomery County police said Tuesday in a statement.
Marques Buford, 49, of Germantown was charged with false imprisonment following the Sunday standoff, police said. He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville. Online court records do not have a lawyer listed for Burford as of Tuesday morning.
According to the statement, officers were dispatched to the 12300 block of Silvergate Way at roughly 7:20 a.m. for the report of a domestic incident. A woman called emergency services stating that her husband wouldn’t let her leave their residence.
Buford “reportedly made threats toward police if they attempted to enter the apartment,” the statement said.
Upon arrival, officers found Burford armed with a large butcher knife outside of the couple’s apartment. The officers “attempted to use less-lethal force, but it had no effect” because Buford was wearing several layers of clothing and a paintball mask, according to the statement.
Officers, including a trained negotiator, were able to de-escalate the situation and Buford was taken into custody after attempting to run away, police said. No one was injured during the incident.
Buford was evaluated at a local hospital before he was taken to the central processing unit, the statement said.
Police said a check of Buford’s address revealed Buford’s “history of dangerous behavior.”
According to online court records, Buford has been charged with several other crimes including second-degree assault in 2019, disorderly conduct in 2017 and trespassing on private property in 2018. He pled guilty to each of those charges, according to the records.
