Wheaton’s Ooh La La Bakery is aiming to open a new location in downtown Bethesda on May 1, according co-owner Luis Velasco. Signage is posted on the windows of its space on the corner of Battery Lane and Woodmont Avenue, and the Velasco said he hopes to start construction in December.
The French-style bakery, which has a location in Wheaton, makes and sells pastries, pies, cakes, small desserts, quiche and bread, according to its menu. In addition, the bakery serves paninis, sandwiches, crepes and breakfast dishes.
Ooh La La Bakery is taking over the former space of The Shop Salon, which relocated to 7700 Wisconsin Ave. in Bethesda. The new location is across from a Harris Teeter supermarket.
The signage includes the bakery’s logo, a QR code that links to its website and a “Coming soon…” message.
First Watch opens in White Oak Town Center

First Watch, a Florida-based restaurant that serves breakfast, brunch and lunch, opened its third Montgomery County location in Silver Spring’s White Oak Town Center in late October, according to the restaurant.
Located at 12255 Prosperity Drive, the eatery joins other tenants such as Oak Barrel & Vine, Starbucks and Jersey Mike’s at the new shopping center development on Columbia Pike.
Among the items served at the restaurant are avocado toast, eggs benedict, lemon ricotta pancakes, breakfast tacos and omelets, as well as sandwiches, salads, fresh juices, coffee and cocktails, according to the menu.
The 4,000 square-foot space seats more than 130, the restaurant said in an October press release. First Watch is open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.
Two sushi restaurants named best in D.C. area
Last week, Eater D.C. highlighted two sushi restaurants in Montgomery County on its list of places to “find standout sushi” around Washington, D.C.: Sushiko at 5455 Wisconsin Ave. in Chevy Chase and Hinata Sushi Carryout at 4947 St. Elmo Ave. in Bethesda.
Sushiko, a Chevy Chase staple serving traditional hand rolls, nigiri and sashimi, opened in 2008. The restaurant features Kobo, a smaller restaurant within the main establishment that serves a tasting menu.
Hinata Sushi Carryout is a family-owned shop by sushi chef Waka Sakita and his wife, Nobuko. The eatery also features a market stocked with Japanese produce and snacks, such as Hello Kitty candies and dashi powder.
In 2015, Bethesda Magazine selected Hinata Sushi Carryout as the “Best Carryout Sushi” spot in its Best of Bethesda issue.
Local vegan eatery to launch kids menu Wednesday
Rooted3, a downtown Bethesda plant-based restaurant and market, is introducing its first kids menu on Wednesday, according to Chevy Chase resident Molly Gibson, who co-owns the business with her mother, Melissa Peppe.
Gibson told MoCo360 on Thursday she created a kid-friendly menu that is also gluten free after customers asked for more items for children.
The eatery at 4916 Cordell Ave., which opened in January, has outdoor seating and includes a small market offering snacks and grocery items.
The kids menu feature pizza bagels, smaller-sized bowls, a pasta dish with tomato sauce and plant-based cheese and vegan smoothies, Gibson said. Adults also can order from the menu.
Wednesday also will mark the addition of avocado toasts to the main menu, she said.
