Silver Spring basement fire displaces five adults, official says

No injuries reported after Monday morning blaze

A fire in the basement of a two-story home in Silver Spring on Monday morning displaced five residents and caused $225,000 in damage, according to a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) official.  

MCFRS crews were dispatched to the single-family home at 500 Burnt Mills Ave. at roughly 8:40 a.m. for reports of a fire in the basement, according to radio transmissions. MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said although the fire didn’t spread to the upper levels of the home and no injuries were reported. By 8:47 a.m., the fire was under control, according to radio transmissions.  

Piringer wrote on social media that a fire alarm notified two people in the house of the fire and they were able to vacate the house and call 911, Piringer wrote.

Some lanes of Columbia Pike were closed due to the emergency response, Piringer added.  

On social media, Piringer wrote that the cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire caused $225,000 in damage, with $150,000 in damages to the structure and $75,000 in damages to the contents of the home.
