MoCo early voting turnout already surpasses primary early voting total

More than 22,000 county voters cast their ballot on first day

October 25, 2024 9:59 p.m.

More voters in Montgomery County cast a ballot on the first day of early voting on Thursday than in the entire early voting period for the primary election in May, according to unofficial state elections board data.

More than 22,435 voters cast a ballot Thursday. That’s more than 3% of the county’s 683,515 eligible voters. During the entire eight-day early voting period for the May primary, 20,360 residents voted. Mail-in ballots have also been flooding in, with more than 80,000 having been received by the county board of elections by Thursday evening, according to state data.

The state board will be posting unofficial totals on its website daily throughout the early voting period, which runs through Oct. 31. These numbers exclude any provisional ballots cast, so actual totals may be higher, which is why they are considered unofficial results.

The county’s 14 early voting centers will be open daily, including Saturday and Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters can cast their ballots at any site during the early voting period but must vote at their assigned precinct on Election Day on Nov. 5. In addition to the presidential race between front-runners Vice President Kamala Harris (D) and former President Donald Trump (R), races on local ballots include those for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives as well for county judges and the Montgomery County Board of Education. Voters will also decide whether to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, and if term limits for the county executive should change.

Democrats made up the largest proportion of voters on Thursday, with more than 13,800 voters, or more than 3% of the county’s registered Democrats, casting ballots. More than 60% of county voters are registered as Democrats. Nearly 5% of the county’s registered Republican voters, or more than 4,600, cast their ballots Thursday, according to the state data.

According to the unofficial data, the Germantown Community Recreation Center and the Potomac Community Recreation Center were the most popular voting sites on Thursday, with more than 2,340 ballots cast at each site.
