Montgomery County detectives are investigating the death of an 88-year-old man in Silver Spring as a homicide, police said Tuesday in a statement.
Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews were dispatched to the 12000 block of Sandalwood Lane in Silver Spring around 6:55 p.m. Monday for the report of a woman screaming, according to police radio transmissions. Police arrived and found the man who was then pronounced dead at the scene, according to the statement.
Police initially thought the man’s death was a suicide, noting on radio transmissions that the man had a cord wrapped around his neck and that there was also “a lot of blood” at the scene. At roughly 7:10 p.m., an officer dispatched to the incident asked over the radio for the on-call homicide detective to contact the officers at the scene.
According to the police statement, the man will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy will be conducted to officially determine the cause and manner of death. Police said the incident is an active and ongoing investigation.
