A pedestrian who was critically injured when struck by a reversing pickup truck Thursday morning in Olney remains hospitalized, according to authorities on Friday morning.
The collision marked the third involving a pedestrian to have occurred in the county on Thursday morning. Two other pedestrians were also struck and injured in separate collisions, according to Montgomery County police.
At about 9:16 a.m., officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to the 3500 block of Cherry Valley Drive for the report of a collision involving a white Ford F-250 pickup truck and a pedestrian, police said Friday in a statement.
According to police, the pedestrian was sitting on the tailgate of the pickup truck, which was being used at a work site. The pedestrian fell from the tailgate to the roadway while the truck was reversing and “was run over by the backing truck,” police said.
The pedestrian “sustained life-threatening injuries” and was transported to a local hospital, police said, adding that the truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
In the first of Thursday’s collisions, a pedestrian walking a dog was struck around 7:30 a.m. in the area of Longdraft Road and Pheasant Run Drive in Gaithersburg, MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote on social media.
Both the pedestrian and the dog were transported to the appropriate hospitals for their injuries, he said, with the person transported as a priority one. According to Maryland protocols, a priority one patient is defined as a “critically ill or injured person requiring immediate attention; unstable patients with life-threatening injury or illness.”
Another pedestrian was struck shortly after 9 a.m. in the vicinity of Woodglen Drive and Edson Lane in North Bethesda, according to Piringer. The pedestrian was transported to Suburban Hospital for treatment of injuries, according to police radio transmissions.
